PrepNow Tutor - Clair H.

Claire holds a BS in mathematics from Rockford University. In addition to tutoring math, she currently works as a bank teller and musician. Claire started tutoring in college, teaching math of all types at the college level, from basic algebra to abstract algebra, calculus, and statistics. “My mother is a teacher, my sister is a teacher, I was bound to end up doing it as well,” Claire reflects, adding that she loves seeing when a difficult concept finally clicks for a student.
When asked about her tutoring style, Claire says, “I make sure that the student understands the 'why' behind the math, and isn’t just memorizing things, which requires a much more hands-on approach to their learning.” More specifically, Claire frequently checks her students’ understanding by having them explain what they are doing. “That way, I can understand their thought process and challenge them with reasons it may or may not work,” Claire says. “This is especially useful in mathematics, as it is not just how to solve equations, but problem solving and analysis skills in general.”
In high school, Claire played soccer and was involved with the chess team, Scholastic Bowl, math team, and marching and symphonic bands. In college, she was in the university choir.
“I am a musician and avid chess player,” Claire says. “I play saxophone, guitar, a little piano, and I sing multiple genres, all the way from Baroque style opera to contemporary rock and metal. As for chess, I've played since around five years old, so it's just something that's stuck with me.” Claire can solve a Rubik's Cube in 10 seconds on average.
