PrepNow Tutor - Nicole B.
Veteran educator Nicole is a positive, fun-loving person who always looks for the joy in life. She attended Ferris State University where she earned a bachelor’s in mathematics secondary education with a minor in biology. Nicole then received her master’s in teaching from Marygrove College.
In 2007, Nicole began teaching high school mathematics. She has taught algebra 1 and 2, geometry, pre-calculus, and AP statistics. She even received the Teacher of the Year award at her high school. Especially in her early years, she tutored after school in addition to tutoring outside of school. She tutored both math subjects and SAT and ACT preparation. Nicole is also involved in student activities, serving as a class advisor, math club advisor, and volunteering at school events.
“I prefer to work WITH the students; learning where their strengths and weaknesses are to start and then building on from there,” Nicole explains. “I do not enjoy just directly spoon-feeding facts to students.” Teaching math is a unique process compared to other subjects. As Nicole says, “Much learning is done in the action of doing when it comes to math.” Because of this, she likes to maintain open space as well as “a physically and mentally comfortable environment.” Her favorite moment is always when a struggling student suddenly understands a concept. “I love celebrating and capitalizing on their confidence moving forward.”
Nicole played basketball and volleyball as a student, and she still enjoys playing volleyball. She loves to spend time outdoors in warm weather—she goes on adventures and will play any activity involving games and logic. She also likes to do DIY home projects. Nicole is also a fan of attending concerts and sporting events. And she absolutely loves the Detroit Lions!
