An energetic and empathetic tutor, Carla is devoted to helping others succeed. She holds an MEd in special education from Loyola Marymount University and a BA in cognitive neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania. She also received a certificate in school management and leadership from Harvard Business School and completed the Leaders in Educational Preparation Program through the Santa Clara County of Education. Clara started her career in education through Teach for America in 2015. She currently works as a high school special education teacher, teaching biology, integrated science, and study skills.

Carla started tutoring middle school and high school students in 2012. She has continued to teach and tutor ever since, instructing students in science and test prep. “I love teaching because I believe education is a pathway to freedom and choice for all,” she says. “Tutoring and teaching allow me to connect with students who are looking to devote additional time to learn a variety of skills to reach their goals.” Carla focuses on how her students learn best when teaching them how to tackle a problem. She offers expertise mentorship on passing exams, mastering new academic subjects, and learning lifelong studying skills. “I love when a student gains the confidence to tackle whatever comes their way in and out of the classroom,” she says.

Clara has extensive experience working with students who have auditory processing disorders, visual processing disorders, ADHD, Autism, and other learning disabilities. She also has worked as a high school student advisor, offering behavioral counseling and goal mentorship. In addition to tutoring SAT and ACT prep, Carla has tutored hundreds of students in history, Spanish, English, psychology, and more. “My teaching style is guided by the needs and personality of the student,” she says. “I first share a structure of expectations as well as guide a joint reflection for the student to feel a sense of ownership as we determine the pace and outline of our goals. We then determine the style of teaching (direct instruction, observation and application, etc.) and overall preference for teaching styles. Lastly, I teach with patience, empathy, and a dose of humor to get through challenges.”

As a student, Carla participated in debate, student government, baton, and many service-oriented and honors societies. Carla kayaked the Grand Canal in Italy when she studied abroad in Venice, Italy. She loves to spend time with her loved ones, cook, enjoy nature (the beach or any body of water), and listen to music and dance. “I'm civically motivated and am involved in our local government,” she shares. She is Latina, a first-generation American, a first-generation college student, and the recipient of numerous awards.
