PrepNow Tutor - Justin H.

A tutor since 2006, Justin is passionate about the success of his students and loves giving the gift of education. He holds a BA in math and political science from Northwestern University. Justin has spent his career in the IT world, working in product and project management and implementing new strategic initiatives from the wisp of an idea to a fully operational solution. Justin started tutoring out of a passion for learning, inspired by teaching adult technical training. He quickly discovered that he loved helping students of all ages succeed with improved scores and increased confidence.
For over eleven years, Justin has tutored SAT and ACT prep. He has worked with a wide range of students, from high performers who ultimately earned Ivy League scholarships, to students initially scoring very poorly. Justin has also tutored academic subjects from 7th grade to college level, teaching AP Physics, writing, and math at all levels, but especially honors geometry and pre-calculus. “I often work with my academic clients for multiple years as a learning partner,” Justin says. Additionally, Justin has specialized in interventional and turnaround situations and has offered developmental tutoring.
“I believe in holistic learning,” Justin says. “It is more important for a student to understand why something is the right answer than to fill out the bubble correctly.” Notably, Justin believes tutoring should focus on helping the student gain confidence. “I much rather they continue to grow and perform when I'm not in the room than to get a grade one time on one test,” he explains. “I take a holistic approach as I believe it invests in the long-term success of each student.” By forming a personal connection with the student and their family, Justin establishes trust and engagement.
In high school, Justin played percussion and piano and participated in Scholastic Bowl and Boy Scouts. In college, he was on the Dance Marathon Executive Board, was involved in Special Olympics, and worked at the concert hall. He continues to love music, performing, and writing music for fun.
Justin also enjoys spending time with friends, cooking and baking, reading extensively, keeping up with particle physics, and watching earnest movies and "bad" reality TV shows.
