PrepNow Tutor - Judith L.

A teacher and former librarian, Judy has taught college classes in research skills as well as computer literacy. She received her bachelor's of fine arts in photography from the University of Delaware and a master's in library and information sciences from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
After graduating, Judy worked as an academic librarian for about 10 years and taught a few "Intro to Computing" courses for first-year college students. Since then, she has worked as a freelancer, indexing academic texts. She began tutoring in graduate school while studying learning styles; she taught students, individually and in groups, how to find and cite sources. "Teaching new skills and ideas has been my favorite part of being a librarian and favorite part of being a parent," she offers.
Judy's approach is student-centered and goal-oriented. "I like to know what a student wants to accomplish and what they ultimately would like to do in life; I find it's easier to connect with students when I know more about them as people," she explains. When it comes to motivating students, she's adept at finding ways to connect students' interests with—often seemingly dry or "boring"—course materials. Judy is also keenly aware of learning styles. "For instance, if a student is more of a verbal learner, I like to have them talk through what they are doing," she adds. Above all, creating a relaxed learning environment is key. "I take time to validate feelings and concerns while pushing the student to do their best."
In high school, Judy was in the school band and Key Club. She currently loves making art, particularly ceramics. "Most of my work is handbuilt, functional pieces," she says. When she's not caring for her adopted cat and dog, she loves being outside and reading. "I’ve read more books than I can count!"
