PrepNow Tutor - Jonathan L.

Jonathan has been teaching and tutoring since 2018. He holds a BS in biomedical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and he holds an MA in clinical mental health counseling from Chicago State University. Jonathan’s teaching and tutoring experience has allowed him to work with a rich array of students pursuing many different goals. First, he worked as a peer instructor for Georgia Tech’s Interdisciplinary Design Commons, which is known more colloquially as the Hive Makerspace. This is a design and engineering space and resource center open to any enrolled student wishing to simply create projects. He also worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant for the engineering department. Additionally, since 2022, Jonathan has been a faculty member at Richard J. Daley College, teaching robotics and advanced manufacturing technology to a wide array of student populations. Indeed, one of Jonathan’s proudest teaching moments came as he worked with the College’s “Weekend Warrior” program, wherein he was able to aid returning students and high-risk youth as they pursued their degrees.
Jonathan always begins tutoring by simply speaking with his students. He says, “We first discuss the goals and interests of the student so that we can be sure the time we spend together is in service of those aims.” Thereafter, Jonathan continues to foster a communicative and mutual process. As he helps to build student confidence and expertise, he encourages curiosity and inquisitiveness in his students. First, his training in engineering allows him to take a hands-on and creative approach as he tutors. Also, Jonathan is a licensed professional counsellor, so he is uniquely aware of and attuned to student feedback and is always listening for ways to improve his craft.
As one might expect, given his career path, Jonathan has always been interested in understanding how things (including human beings) work. First, as a high school student, he was captain of the Science Olympiad team and a member of the psychology club. In college, he loved working with scads of creative students in the aforementioned Hive Makerspace. Even still, he tinkers with tech projects, such as building robotic arms that can learn how to draw. All this said, Jonathan is not entirely given over to academic curiosity; he also likes simple joys such as taking walks, sleeping in, and gardening.
