PrepNow Tutor - Michael J.

A recent college graduate and lifelong learner with a passion for art, languages, and culture, Michael hopes to instill growth and curiosity in his students. He has experience working with middle and high school students in ELA, science, social studies, and mathematics (arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, and geometry). While he formerly taught in classrooms and one-on-one private tutoring settings, he’s currently a substitute teacher at Chicago Public Schools. He earned a BA in world language education (Japanese) from DePaul University.
Michael caught the teaching bug in high school when he tutored peers in English, math, and Japanese. “I enjoyed breaking down complex ideas in a way that made sense to others, and that stuck with me, growing over time into a deeper commitment to education,” he shares. His proudest teaching moment involved “re-teaching” a group of math students struggling with an in-class assignment. “Not only did everyone turn in their work, but some were even able to help other students as a result of my instruction. Seeing that growth was outstanding.”
Michael describes his approach as student-centered and patient. “I meet students where they are, and do my best to create a low-pressure, supportive environment,” he explains. He aims for deeper, long-term learning over rote memorization. “I try to connect material to real-world examples whenever possible, and I believe that positive reinforcement goes a long way in motivating students to try engaging with me when concepts become difficult,” he adds.
His academic excellence earned him a spot on the dean’s list all four years at DePaul. In high school, he was president of the anime club.
When he’s not volunteering at conventions in Chicago, he enjoys playing video games, baking, creating cosplay looks, and making art.
