PrepNow Tutor - Dylan O.
Dylan is a student of stories, whether they are the myths that cultures create or the tales students write about themselves. He holds a BA in religion and English literature from Bryn Athyn College, an MA in mythological studies from Pacifica Graduate Institute, and a PhD in mythological studies with an emphasis in depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Dylan has taught actively since 2013, first working for ten years as a general education instructor at a secondary academy, teaching English, history, algebra, and senior capstone in that role. Since then, Dylan has worked as an instructor of literature, creative writing, and religious studies at his undergraduate alma mater and as a private tutor of essay coaching, humanities enrichment, public speaking, and critical reading strategies.
Dylan calls his approach to tutoring relational, intuitive, and adaptive. He says, “I believe that education should balance rigor with relevance, so I value curiosity, deep thought, and creating space for students to connect dots in their own ways.” Once students can find their own way, they are equipped with a lasting confidence with which to “write their own stories.” It is this metaphor that fueled Dylan’s own academic choices and the reason he coaxes students to draw upon their own real-life experiences and personal values as they learn. He is now excited to help test-prep students write new chapters in their lives.
In high school and college, Dylan spent his spare time mostly on soccer and a capella music. Since, and related to his extensive training in mythology and storytelling, Dylan spends a lot of his time consuming and sharing stories. First, regularly, one might find him “nerding out” (his words) to media series such as Batman, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. He also builds labyrinths that are meant to offer places for mindful meditation and that reflect the stories of the people or organizations for which the labyrinths are built. Finally, Dylan creates many stories himself: he writes both creatively and academically, hosts a podcast on myth and meaning, and plays tabletop board games.
