Sumerah is a fun tutor who is full of energy and always finds joy in the little things, and she loves sharing this joy with the people around her. She holds a BS and an MA in medical science from Loyola University Chicago. In between college and graduate school, Sumerah tutored students of all ages and worked as a medical assistant, emergency room scribe, and caregiver, gaining hands-on clinical experience. She is currently tutoring while continuing community health work and applying to medical school.
Sumerah first started tutoring during her freshman year of college and quickly discovered how rewarding it is to help students overcome challenges and gain confidence. “Over the years, I have worked with students from many different backgrounds and grade levels, which taught me how to adapt my teaching style to meet each student’s unique needs,” Sumerah says. “One of my proudest moments was watching a student I had tutored throughout all four years of high school graduate with honors; seeing their growth and knowing I played a part in their success was incredibly fulfilling and reminded me why I love what I do.”
Since 2017, Sumerah has tutored all subjects, including math, science, Spanish, English, and test prep. Math has been Sumerah’s most frequently taught subject, particularly pre-calculus, algebra 1 and 2, and geometry.
"I describe my tutoring style as student-centered and adaptable," Sumerah says. “I take time to understand how each student learns, whether they are visual, auditory, or hands-on learners, and adjust my approach to meet their needs.” Sumerah believes that learning happens best when students feel supported and understood, so she focuses on building confidence first; then she layers on challenging concepts at a pace that keeps students motivated rather than overwhelmed.
“My philosophy is that every student is capable of success when given the right tools and encouragement,” Sumerah shares. “Education is about understanding, curiosity, and learning how to think critically. By creating a positive and engaging environment, I aim to help students develop skills they can use beyond our sessions."
As a student, Sumerah played badminton and was involved in Relay for Life. She was on the dean’s list for five semesters. She loves to spend time with friends and family, write poetry, and create new coffee drinks. “I work hard and stay driven in everything I do, but I also make it a priority to make sure those around me feel comfortable and cared for,” Sumerah says. “At the end of the day, making others smile and feel supported is what makes me happiest.” Sumerah is the oldest of four daughters.
