Matthew's Bio

A passionate educator, Matthew holds a BA in music and psychology from Vanderbilt University and is currently pursuing an MD at the University of Cincinnati. After college, he worked with teens in outdoor therapy in Utah for two years before earning his EMT and working in a Level 1 emergency department for over a year during the COVID-19 pandemic. Matthew later coordinated a research team to survey wastewater for COVID-19 in rural Appalachian communities before beginning medical school in 2022. He plans to practice as a clinician-educator in the field of internal medicine.
Matthew started teaching as a private cello instructor in college and as an outdoor skills instructor for teens and adult staff while working as an outdoor guide. He went on to tutor undergraduates in human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry; he also worked as a coach for medical students in clinical skills. “My proudest moment was when I worked as a peer mentor for an undergraduate student taking biochemistry and successfully guided him to pass the course and take the MCAT in preparation for medical school,” Matthew says.
When asked about his tutoring style, Matthew says, “I believe that the best teachers ask questions that encourage the student to use their existing knowledge to arrive at the answer.” Matthew finds that teaching in this way empowers the student to develop a skill set that can be applied to every question. “I also understand that all examinations test not only knowledge, but also test-taking skills,” Matthew says. “I equip students to use a standardized approach to standardized tests.”
As a student, Matthew played cello and participated in orchestra, cross country, tennis, running, and mountaineering. He was on the Dean's List at Vanderbilt and received a merit-based "Distinction Scholarship" to study medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He was also awarded two grants to complete research on invasive fungal disease in pediatric heart transplant recipients from the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. Since 2022, has played 6300 games of chess. “I love being outside, making music with friends, playing cello and tennis, and going on trips that take me off the beaten path,” Matthew says. Matthew grew up in central Africa and played on NPR's "From the Top.” He has spent more than a year's worth of days and nights on the trail as an outdoor guide.
