PrepNow Tutor - Suahn K.
Suahn earned her BS in biology from Wheaton College, where she was a Presidential Scholarship recipient. While completing her degree, she worked as a medical assistant and has continued in that role since graduating. In addition to tutoring test prep, since finishing college, she has gained experience working in an animal hospital and a bookstore, and she volunteers with the DuPage County Court. “My goal in learning is always to be good enough to teach what I’ve learned, and I hope to inspire my students to do the same,” Suahn says.
Suahn started tutoring math in high school through the Math Honor Society, helping other students with their homework and with test prep. “That year, I discovered the joys of teaching, guiding, and building lasting connections with students,” Suahn shares. She went on to become a teaching assistant in college for chemistry and biology courses, as well as a tutor to underserved middle school students. Over the years, Suahn has taught myriad topics: high school algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus; middle school language arts, math, and history; and college-level biology, chemistry, and animal behavior. “I love to tutor test prep because I enjoyed my own test prep journey and seeing my progress as I made my way to the end goal,” Suahn says. “I hope to make test prep as enjoyable and satisfying for my students as it was for me.”
“I like to encourage students and leave clues for them to find the answer on their own,” Suahn says, when asked about her tutoring style. “I love to find out the why and the behind-the-scenes of concepts to help create a deeper understanding.” Suahn is a big believer in teaching as a method for learning, as it solidifies understanding and builds confidence. “I help my students see themselves as an active participant rather than just a passive listener, so that they can take charge of their learning process and make it their own,” she explains.
As a student, Suahn was involved in the newspaper club, the marching band, badminton, and the pre-health club. She used to have a pet chicken and lived in Seoul, South Korea for about half of her life. “I've been learning how to play the bass recently, and I love the lower register of the instrument,” Suahn shares. She likes to crochet, embroider, and make little craft projects, and her favorite work so far is an anatomically correct heart plushie that she crocheted and gifted to her anatomy professor. “I am a busy bee, rock enthusiast, and a boxer,” she says. “I have so many things that I want to do, so I always keep myself moving. But it doesn't keep me from enjoying a slow walk at sunset or driving the long way around to listen to music a little bit more.”
