A tutor who loves math and is passionate about sharing that love, Paul holds a BS cum laude in biology and a BS in computer science from Texas A&M University. After graduating, Paul worked as a computer programmer for nine years using COBOL and then transitioned to a position in which he interviewed college students about their philosophy of life at the University of Houston. “I had many jobs involving data entry,” Paul shares. “Now I am an independent math, reading, and test prep tutor.”
A student-centered teacher, Paul has experience working with students from elementary to college level, with an emphasis on pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. His proudest moment as a tutor was when a student who was originally failing in college algebra received an A in the class after meeting with him three times a week.
Paul likes to start sessions by exploring what the student already knows and building up from there. “I enjoy using visual aids and explaining every step,” he says. Paul believes students need to show their work and have neat math handwriting, and that students should work through many problems and review past material. “Oftentimes, a student learns something new during each review,” he says.
Paul was salutatorian at his high school, received three college scholarships, and was in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University for four years. He enjoys jogging and chess, is a church deacon, and occasionally teaches Sunday School and leads Bible study. He is an expert in cooking Italian and Chinese food. “I have worked over 10,000 math problems from algebra to calculus,” Paul says.
