Devina's Bio

A tutor who thrives on academic excellence, Devina loves mentoring students. She holds a BS in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Johns Hopkins University and since graduating has continued her work in cardiovascular imaging research. Over the years, she’s received multiple research grants from both Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute of Health, as well as academic honors for excellence in engineering and research.

Devina has been tutoring underclassmen since she was in high school, successfully motivating underserved students towards academic success. “My strengths are communicating with individuals and anticipating their hurdles. This gives me insight into students' needs,” she explains. She has been tutoring the SAT and ACT since 2015, as well as general science and mathematics. "I strongly believe that every student learns better if I teach at their speed,” Devina says. “When I start working with a new student, I learn about their strengths and weaknesses and how those elements impact their work. From there, I cater my tutoring to make them feel interested in the topic, while also nurturing their confidence.” Devina also ensures that her students are comfortable asking her questions as frequently as needed to understand the concept they are working on. She benefited personally from teachers who thoughtfully guided her through her academic challenges, and it increased her overall success and happiness. “I try to carry on that style of teaching, where my students feel motivated toward success while also very comfortable sharing any difficulty," she says.

As a student, Devina played the flute and was the first left-handed flute player at her high school. One of her greatest achievements is bearing a ten-second flute solo on a Grammy-nominated album. She was also captain on the Science Olympiad team where she led the team to the state championship and many awards at the National Science Olympiad Tournament. She enjoys traveling, visiting beaches, playing the flute and violin, and attending concerts. She also volunteers at local schools and hospitals. “As a young child, my ambidextrous tendencies baffled my mother for quite some time,” Devina shares.
