Madelyn's Bio

Physics and calculus are Madelyn’s bread-and-butter! Madelyn, who goes by Maddi, holds a BS in physics with minors in mathematics and business from Gettysburg College. She also obtained a MS in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University.

Maddi began tutoring during her sophomore year of college when she became a peer learning associate for the physics department. In this role, she held one-hour sessions six times a week for Gettysburg College students to seek help with homework, classwork, and exam preparation. This led to a similar position in the math department, where she held sessions once per week. She continued tutoring in the math and physics departments her entire college career and hasn’t looked back! “I find it so satisfying to help others realize their academic potential,” she shares. She thanks all of the stellar professors and tutors she had for inspiring her to help others.

Maddi's approach is collaborative and adaptable. “I guide the student throughout the problem by asking them what they know and giving hints on how to use what they know to progress in the problem,” she explains. Her empathetic nature allows her to build strong tutor-student bonds, which eases the learning process. “Students often realize they already have the capability to solve a hard problem—they just need some guidance or a push,” she adds. She eschews lectures for active engagement via practice problems and examples, often appealing to the student’s interests. “I understand what they are going through as a student since I was in their shoes not long ago!”

Maddi graduated summa cum laude from Gettysburg College and was the recipient of the Dr. George R. Miller and Dr. Richard T. Mara Senior Prize in physics. Her stellar grades also earned her a spot in several honor societies and she was given the Gettysburg College Lincoln Scholar award, the highest-level merit scholarship available.

Maddi played lacrosse throughout her academic career. Her skills earned her the title of Division III Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Maddi loves staying active via long walks and high-intensity interval training. Reading, cooking, and chatting with friends and family are some of her favorite chill-time activities.
